UPDATE: Oedipus Beginning to Think Social Distancing Not Going to Grow Eyes Back
Thinking back on the decision, Oedipus probably could have seen this result coming.
Upon entering his fourth day practicing social distancing, the once-powerful Sophoclean hero and King, Oedipus, began to doubt the blind soothsayer who told him he would sleep with his mother, murder his father, gouge his eyes out, and of course, grow said eyes back only after a few days of isolation. Oedipus’ eyes did not grow back, even a tiny bit. This drove the man who had already reached a mental state in which he was capable of taking his own eyed out to an even lower low. At this newly found low Oedipus went stir crazy because he was constantly thinking back on what the soothsayer had said.
There is a lesson to be potentially learned when hearing the story of our very own, Oedipus. Let’s say Oedipus represents all of us and the soothsayer, the media. If we know the consuming the news and media related to an event is making our day to day lives more stressful, we do have the autonomy to turn it off or limit what we intake.
Keep calm and don’t gouge your eyes out.
